What is the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 commercial hood?

Type 1 vs Type 2 Commercial Hoods – What’s the Difference?

When it comes to commercial hoods, there are two main types – Type 1 and Type 2. So, what’s the difference? And which type do you need for your restaurant? Let’s break it down.

Type 1 hoods are designed for cooking equipment that can lead to grease and grease by-products. This includes fryers, griddles, and ovens. Type 1 hoods are typically made of stainless steel and have a Grease Filter Efficiency Rating (FEG) of 60%. The FEG is a measure of how well the hood can remove grease from the air.

Type 2 hoods are designed for other kitchen appliances and equipment that require the removal of heat and moisture. This includes microwaves, dishwashers, and ice machines. Type 2 hoods have a lower FEG of 40%.

So, which type of hood do you need for your restaurant? It depends on what type of equipment you’re using. If you’re using any cooking equipment that could potentially produce grease, you’ll need a Type 1 Hood to help contain any potential fires that could start from the grease. On the other hand, if you’re just using Dialogue, sautéing, or any other type of cooking that doesn’t produce grease, a Type 2 Hood will suffice.

When choosing a commercial hood for your restaurant, it’s important to know the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 Hood. Type 1 Hoods are designed for cooking equipment that can lead to grease and grease by-products, while Type 2 Hoods are designed for other kitchen appliances and equipment that require the removal of heat and moisture. Be sure to choose the right type of hood for your restaurant so you can keep your kitchen safe and compliant with the code.
